Be the moon!

February 12, 2025. The Full Moon. The Snow Moon. Accompanied by five bright planets in view – Venus, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, and Saturn. A celestial delight.

In Celtic mythology, the birch tree is sacred, thought to have protective influences. In the photo, the birch tree bends low to the water, a bird’s nest tucked into the crook of its trustworthy branches. Together, they look as though they are listening intently for whispers of the moon’s wisdom as her illuminated reflection begs them to come closer.

The nearby grassy reeds stand sentinel, honoring her reflection while attentive to her silent communication. The calmness over the lake is palpable. The anticipation of her message leaves me breathless.

As I gaze in wonder at the moon and her reflection, I ask myself, “Is her wisdom simply in the lesson of her reflection, shining on the water exactly as she appears?”

Standing along the shore, I deeply inhale the cold evening air, hoping a breath of clarity will bring insight. As I slowly exhale, the questions come, “Do our thoughts, actions and words reflect back to us in the same exact way as we send them out? If we express anger and hatred, how can we expect joy and love to flow to us?”

The light of the sun is reflected off the moon’s cold, rocky surface. “So how could the moon, possibly reflect as a star? Or Jupiter? Or Saturn? How could it be anything but the moon?”

I walk back along the darkening shoreline to get a closer look at the moon, to fully witness its surface and to lean in to this wisdom of moonlight.

Our outer world is a reflection of our inner world, just like the moon is the moon inside and out. If we are peaceful and calm internally, then our outer beings will reflect true tranquility and harmony. Trees, nests and reeds already know this. They, along with the moon, are my teachers on this full moon night. Perhaps you will see this majestic February Snow Moon, and let the wisdom from her moonbeams shine down on you.

Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” So maybe it’s nurturing those qualities within us that we want reflected back to us. If we want to receive love, we must give love. If we want to have joy, we must be joyful. If we want peace, then we must carry peace within us. If we see beauty and goodness in moonlight, we can see it in the world. And we will let the world reflect back to us all the goodness and kindness we give to her. We will be the moon!
