Judge’s Commentary

Early in 2020, I entered my third book, Change: Our Ever-Present Companion, Reflections from the Red Kayak, in the 28th Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards. Although the book did not win, it received the highest marks for structure, organization, cover design, voice and writing style, among other things. Below is the judge’s commentary. I am honored to receive such a complimentary review from the professionals who judged this contest. Thank you, Writer’s Digest.

CHANGE: OUR EVER-PRESENT COMPANION, REFLECTIONS FROM THE RED KAYAK by Mary Anne Smrz is an amazing book that will help nature lovers, kayakers, and those who connect with dogs, in particular, to contemplate and think about change. The title is accurate in that we all face change, whether wanted or unwanted. By taking a tour with the author, the reader can explore shifts and transitions.

“Your Droplets of Awareness” pages give readers a chance to contemplate their thoughts and emotions as they make the journey. Black-and-white photos of nature make this book unique, and will be a treat for the reader who responds well to visuals.

The cover is vibrant and gorgeous. The lovely golden tree in the center of the greenery is a standout, its image reflecting upon the lake. We see the red tip of a kayak. Brilliant! The back cover copy serves the reader well to explain the book. The reader endorsements are interesting. Some information about the author would have added much here, but since there are photos inside and the author reveals much about herself, the reader can see why that information was omitted on the cover.

Overall, this is a beautiful book that tackles a tough topic with love and respect. Sharing experiences such as meeting an Episcopalian priest, and drawing quotes across the spectrum of humanity, this author demonstrates her open mind and heart that she encourages for her readers. May this author continue to have love in her life.
