Lessons from the Red-Winged Blackbird

I have always been fascinated by red-winged blackbirds when I have been paddling through the inlets and coves on many Wisconsin lakes. How they swoop around in the marshes and then land on a tiny strand of reed. The unsuspecting reed sways back and forth, adjusting to the weight of this surprise visitor and it looks as though the bird will fall off. But somehow, it manages to hold on, announcing its arrival with a shrilling con-ka-ree! The red-winged blackbird’s song is considered the herald of spring, proclaiming its victory over winter. At this time of the year, they still sing their melody, but they are getting ready for their autumn transformation.

Change and transition have been the focus of this summer’s reflections and the fascinating story of this bird fits right in. I learned that they feed and roost in flocks, but at this time of the year they vanish. They hide in the vegetation, molt their flight feathers and eventually grow new ones. This process prepares them for their journey south for the winter.

What a fabulous lesson we can learn from these blackbirds about transition! Change, as we know, is an exterior occurrence. Some event that was either thrust upon us or one of our own choosing. Transition, on the other hand, is the internal work we need to do to get to the other side of change to the new beginning. The blackbirds, apparently, know about transition as they gather in the vegetation to molt. They remove themselves from the day to day flying about the marsh, to prepare themselves for their next journey. They are content to be away for their gestation to their new self.

We, on the other hand, want to continue to flit about the marsh. Molting does not come easy for us because we want to fly from one change to the next and be OK, without shedding the old feathers. New growth struggles to take hold within us amidst the unshed clutter.

The next time you find yourself in the midst of change and transition, think of the red-winged blackbird. Somewhere in this stand of reeds, behind what we can see…

…the red-winged blackbirds are contently molting, shedding the old and embracing the new. May you move through your transition with the same ease and trust that on the other side of the old, something beautiful and new is unfolding. A glorious beginning awaits you….the red-winged blackbird will show you the way!

What transition is at hand for you?

What one simple thing can you do right now to shed the old?

Take flight today out of the marsh, and find your space to molt!
